IDENTITY FRAUD - What a Nightmare!

It’s one of those things you hear about and always think happens to other people, not you. Until it does. Just this week I received an automatic email from my bank that a bill was paid from automatic deduct. That would have been okay except the only authorized bill I pay from that account always comes out on the 1st of the month and this was the 12th of the month! I immediately checked my online statement and there were 4, unknown to me, payees about to receive over $7000 from my account! Luckily, I caught the error quickly and reported it. There was still some inconvenience (like having to close the account, open a new one, contact outstanding checks and explain the situation), but nothing like it would have been if I hadn’t opened that email.
Just a few days before this happened to me, I had a conversation with my business partner, Francine and we were discussing a company we heard about that protects you and defends you in case of identity theft. I was now a convert to the cause. I got online and joined LifeLock. I didn’t do much research. I just joined because the price was good, only $110 a year and I needed some immediate source of comfort. But, my brother in Colorado who has way too much time on his hands, did do some research and sent me this link which compares these type of services.
I guess it couldn’t hurt to join more than one and if I get the time and inclination to open this site and read it, may be I will do that. All I know is that there are some pretty devious and clever people out there and they find ways to infiltrate into innocent people’s lives and can make them a living hell. It’s definitely worth a little time and money for the peace of mind it can bring to know you have someone on your side in case of this kind of situation.

Thanks for the insight on Lifelock. I am going to look into it.
Aloha,

Thanks for the great links and a first hand account. Scary isn’t it? Another area of concern is identity theft at the closing table. Take a look at a post I did a while back on this topic -
